When it comes down to it, some commissioning is better than no commissioning. However, this author brings his opinions and experiences to bear in reminding us that familiarity with the different types of commissioning can earn big savings if used at the right moments in your building’s life. A second author contributes a sidebar on retrocommissioning and the considerable payback that process can generate.
Leaning on experience and data from various K-12 cities and projects, the author pursues some less conventional design approaches. They may revolve around radiant heating and/or cooling, but depending on school size and other factors, the smart use of heat recovery, DOAS, and improved central plants could also put a project on the HVAC honor roll.
