The Air Conditioning & Refrigeration technology Institute's Twenty-First Century Research (21-CR) initiative has released three final reports:
Assessment of the State of the Art, and Potential Design Improvements, for Flat-Tube Heat Exchangers in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Applications (Phase I) - The University of Illinois evaluated air-side heat transfer and pressure-drop performance of a serpentine-fin, flat-tube geometry for hvac/r applications. The geometrical and operating conditions where the configuration may be superior to conventional heat exchangers were established, as were the conditions under which it may be inferior. These findings are of high value to design and development engineers as they work toward the next generation of highly compact, energy efficient hvac/r systems.
Evaluating the Ability of Unitary Equipment to Maintain Adequate Space Humidity Levels, Phase I (ASHRAE Research Project 1121-RP) - The University of Colorado documented a plan to evaluate the ability of unitary hvac equipment to control humidity in different commercial buildings under varying climate conditions. The report describes 1,360 computer simulations for five different building types, eight climate locations, and 17 equipment options. ASHRAE may use the simulation plan in a Phase II effort to document the performance of the various humidity control options in different applications. This work will provide guidance to design engineers and building operators.
