Melaver Family Properties, Inc., a Savannah, GA-based real estate development company, recently applied for LEED certification, on the Whitaker Building, located in Savannah. The renovated historic building was recently the site of a tour when Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) professor Monica Letourneau took 18 students out of the lecture hall and into the world of successful design with a visit to the building. The Whitaker Building's most significant LEED feature is the re-use of materials, including much of the building's original flooring and many of its historic windows. Other energy-saving LEED features include paints and finishes containing low VOC; high-efficiency lighting and HVAC systems; R-30 insulation in the roof, which provides significant protection during extreme heat and cold; and cabinets made from wheat-board, a highly sustainable product.
