Distributed Energy Resources: Integrating Renewable Energy
Renewable energy sources are becoming more commonly incorporated by utilities. Unlike conventional generated power sources, renewables are intermittent and variable by their very nature. While utility and grid operators are integrating renewable energy into their systems through power management experiences, municipalities and commercial/industrial applications are turning toward Distributed Energy Resources (DER) to augment or replace utility provided power. Developments in microgrid technology have made smaller scale DERs more feasible, granting the use of renewable energy sources effectively and seamlessly to meet long-term sustainability goals in an environmentally conscious world.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the key elements and terms associated with distributed energy resources.
- Define the fundamental characteristics and challenges regarding renewable energy resources.
- Classify the potential benefits of microgrids for integrating renewable energy.
- Examine how to optimize renewable energy resources by integrating energy storage.
