Century Refrigeration, a division of RAE Corporation, has released the new Centinel™ Intelligent Defrost Control System. Company officials report that the control system improves refrigeration system energy efficiency, eliminates icing and fogging, and reduces operating costs.

A traditional defrost control system relies upon a room thermostat, defrost time clock, and defrost termination/fan delay thermostat for mechanical control of the refrigeration system. The Centinel instead consists of a microprocessor-driven controller, four temperature sensors, and a suction transducer. The manufacturer says the microprocessor, paired with sensitive temperature sensors, controls the system with better precision and accuracy.

The Centinel aims to reduce the energy used by the system by precisely controlling superheat and fans, reducing compressor run time, and implementing demand defrosts. It uses a self-learning algorithm that allows it to automatically adjust to changing system conditions, making it customized to each individual evaporator. The Centinel can be used with both new and existing applications.
