The federal energy policy act signed into law Aug. 6, 2005 takes effect Jan. 1, 2006. While most of it does not impact buildings, Uncle Sam has provided a two-year time window (closing Dec. 31, 2007) during which he will pay up to $1.80/sq ft for energy upgrades. He set the bar rather high, however, so those looking to grab the cash before it's gone will need to look closely at his rules.
