Belts: Factors, Fictions, And Friction (September 2000)
Manufacturers have yet to eliminate friction and wear from assembled moving parts. Some manufacturers use friction to their advantage. The belt drive industry is an example, and many fine reciprocal compressors, including those in the refrigeration industry, use this ancient – and still effective – form of power transmission.
Some companies haven’t readjusted their v-belts for ten years, while others have continual problems. It’s possible some of these problems are due to people believing they have properly aligned v-belts when they actually do not.
