Sheet Metal Workers Local 33 Delivers Suicide Prevention Training
Annually, more construction workers die by suicide than every other workplace-related fatality combined.
Most everyone has been touched by suicide in some way — whether it’s news of a celebrity who seemingly had experienced no outward problems or a close friend who was struggling with depression or addiction. The numbers are staggering. Suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. in 2019, the second leading cause for those ages 10-34, and the fourth-leading cause for those 35-44. And those statistics were collected before the pandemic.
Unfortunately, the numbers are even more concerning in the construction industry. Annually, more construction workers die by suicide than every other workplace-related fatality combined. The industry is second highest on the list of occupations in lives claimed by suicide, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
