Many of you are, right now, at the AHR Expo in Chicago. I don’t think it is a stretch to say that the show is a classic event, as professionals gather to learn and steer the direction of the HVAC industry.

There was another classic event held in Chicago this month, The Winter Classic, wherein the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks played a hockey game outside, old-timey style, at Wrigley Field on a rink constructed in the infield.

Interestingly, the game between the two Original Six rivals has an HVAC industry-related focus in the form of sensors. According to Laurie Sullivan, who wrote an article on the technology forRFID World, the Eye on the Ice System transmitted information on humidity, airflow, dewpoints, and temperature below the ice every 30 sec.

The wireless system then sent the information to laptops and cellphones for immediate updates, allowing ground crews to fix problems immediately.

That’s classic.
