Cornell’s Bill and Melinda Gates Hall required a suitably thoughtful design process. After considerable analysis, an unusual strategy emerged, led by chilled beams and DOAS with key dehumidification elements.
Through a flexible design incorporating radiant heating and cooling, demand ventilation, energy recovery, and VAV, Manhattan’s Cooper Union leads its class in sustainable performance in
classrooms, labs, and beyond.
Leaning on experience and data from various K-12 cities and projects, the author pursues some less conventional design approaches. They may revolve around radiant heating and/or cooling, but depending on school size and other factors, the smart use of heat recovery, DOAS, and improved central plants could also put a project on the HVAC honor roll.
