Carrier has released its newly designed variable air volume (VAV) WeatherExpert™ 48/50LC 6- to 23-ton packaged rooftop units. The newly designed WeatherExpert VAV models, available from 23 tons down to 6 tons, use a dedicated i-Vu® controller that links communication between the system zone terminals and the unit to efficiently adjust the air flow and compressor stages that are required.
Look at not only some nearly automatic benefits-in-waiting for your average hospital boiler retrofit, but also at some ideas for what to do if there isn’t budget for a full replacement. Meanwhile, a short laundry list of hospital-specific boiler considerations actually includes the laundry (but not how you might expect).
Generally, when we think about BAS, it is in the context of large commercial buildings, those well over 25,000 sq ft. According to the latest government data though (from the 2012 Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey), 88% of all commercial buildings are 25,000 sq ft or less.
Sometimes it’s less important to think outside the box than to notice that the stuff inside the box has changed. In the case of airside economizers, more modern components and seasonal opportunities can make things work swimmingly.
What does a full-scale modernization on a 90-yr-old federal building and courthouse look like when it aims for federal energy goals and LEED status? Chiller plant and hot water/boiler overhauls are just the start. Aggressive lighting and water treatment/conservation strategies also contribute to the GSA’s effort to throw the book at this Alabama retrofit.
The wave of acceptance for this design option continues to grow in North
America. Get up to speed on when and where chilled beams can have the
most impact. Then move into humidity control, supply air, system
sizing differences compared to VAV, economizers, and more.
