When Miller Bonded Inc. (MBI) decided to design its new pipe fabrication facility in Albuquerque, NM, the HVAC mechanical contractor not only wanted to streamline production, it also wanted an energy-efficient building.
In which the design team realized they could pump irrigation water from the campus’ main distribution line at night to use for cooling during the day if they could figure out how to store thousands of gallons of water on the new building’s first floor -- a vertically small space. Piping strategy, CFD, and chilled beams fill out an innovative closing argument on behalf of this Utah law school.
Cornell’s Bill and Melinda Gates Hall required a suitably thoughtful design process. After considerable analysis, an unusual strategy emerged, led by chilled beams and DOAS with key dehumidification elements.
Circumstances converged to construct a pair of plants on campus in a short timeframe. However, these projects weren’t identical twins by any means: different needs, locations, and other factors drove some major differences, from cooling towers to standby power.
This law school design story moves on from rationales for early decisions to the specific next-phase design challenges. Team effort combines with DOAS, radiant ceiling panels, DCV, and setpoint fine-tuning to maintain this case’s appeal.
Perhaps the U.S.’s largest to-date Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS) coupled with radiant ceiling panel (RCP) cooling and heating mechanical system is currently under construction at the Washington College of Law at American University (Washington).
The newly refurbished Kanata Leisure & Fitness Centre Wave Pool (KLFCWP) in Kanata, Ontario, gives HVAC engineers and contractors an unprecedented look into the challenges they’ll face in future natatorium retrofits.
Boiler Maintenance & Lifecycle Costs; Proper upkeep can seem like a high bar, but it's nothing compared to a drain on the budget, an avoidable full replacement, or an on-site incident, read more in January issue.
