The PC2 evaporative condenser from Baltimore Air Coil is a counterflow, induced draft, axial fan unit that operates between 41 and 2,506 ammonia tons. The PC2 is suited for retrofits due to its size, steel supports, and capacity ranges. The unit has been shake table tested and verified up to an SDS of 3.75g, meeting the wind and seismic requirements of the 2009 International Building Code.
Leaning on experience and data from various K-12 cities and projects, the author pursues some less conventional design approaches. They may revolve around radiant heating and/or cooling, but depending on school size and other factors, the smart use of heat recovery, DOAS, and improved central plants could also put a project on the HVAC honor roll.
