Purdue to debut its International High Performance Buildings Conference

KIn 1972, a group of Purdue University professors saw the need for a research conference on compressors and started the International Compressor Engineering Conference. In 1986, the refrigeration conference was added, and in 2002 research on air conditioning became part of this conference. 2010 will bring yet another addition to these research conferences. Today’s environmental concerns have emphasized this new area where Purdue feels it can serve as a venue for cutting-edge research presentations. The university is pleased to announce the 1st International High Performance Buildings Conference at Purdue.

The 2010 conferences will begin on Monday, July 12 and end on Thursday, July 15 and will be held on the campus of Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, USA. Special room rates will be made available to attendees at various hotels and Purdue facilities. Transportation between venues will be available to attendees by hotel courtesy vans, the city buses, trolleys, and Purdue buses.

Three short courses will be conducted prior to the 2010 Conferences. They will take place on the Purdue University campus beginning on Saturday, July 10 at 1:00 p.m. and ending on Sunday, July 11 at 5:00 p.m. One course, Introduction to Compressors (Compressors 101), will highlight the various compressors currently on the market and their applications. Another course will focus on Supermarket Refrigeration and will be sponsored by the USNC/IIR. The third course will be on high-performance building technologies with emphasis on building envelopes, integrated solar, ventilation, and indoor environment.

This conference will take place every two years, partnering with many sponsoring and co-operating organizations from around the world. The event will actually comprise three parallel conferences:
  • The International Compressor Engineering Conference
  • The International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
  • The International High Performance Buildings Conference
The goal is to provide an opportunity for practitioners and researchers in industry, government, consulting offices, laboratories, and universities to reach a large audience, to exchange current engineering information, problems and solutions on the important issues of compressor technology, new refrigerants, and refrigeration technology and efficiency. The focus is primarily on research and advanced development of components and systems, co-sponsored by the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories, ARI, ASHRAE, IIR and the USNCR/IIR.

This new conference will cover several areas of building design and performance, including the following:
  • Building thermal systems
  • Solar energy use in buildings
  • Sustainable buildings and green technologies
  • Building envelope/facades
  • Net-zero building design
  • Ventilation
  • Building-integrated photovoltaics
  • Indoor environment and human comfort
  • Acoustics
  • Building simulation
  • Integrated building design
  • Related case studies
