Daikin AC (Americas), Inc. continues its trend in offering intelligent and energy saving heating and cooling solutions to the North American residential market with the introduction of Daikin Altherma.

Daikin Altherma is an innovative alternative heating and domestic hot water solution that is three to five times more energy efficient than using conventional fossil fuel systems. The air-to-water heat pump system maximizes comfort and energy savings by capitalizing on Daikin’s technological strengths. Additionally, Daikin Altherma features a space cooling ability not common with traditional systems.

Daikin Altherma consists of two main components (outdoor unit and hydrobox) combined with optional accessories such as a water tank and solar thermal kit. For space heating, Daikin Altherma can be connected to low temperature radiators, under floor heating or fan coil units. It is extremely flexible, and can be configured in many different ways in order to suit the requirements of the customer. Like all Daikin products offered in North America, Daikin Altherma uses R-410A refrigerant.

Unlike traditional heating systems that rely heavily on fossil fuels, 66 to 80% of the heat generated by Daikin Altherma is from a renewable source - the air. Through its thermodynamic cycle, the heat pump “pumps” heat from the outside air even at a temperature as low as -4ºF and uses it through a water distribution system in the home. Daikin Altherma is offered in two versions: a split type system where the hydrobox is installed inside the house connected through refrigerant piping to the outdoor unit, and a monobloc type system, where the hydrobox resides in the outdoor unit, eliminating the need for refrigerant piping connection.

Daikin Altherma provides the ability to intricately monitor and manipulate system performance. It features an automatic control system that adjusts the system’s operation to varying ambient conditions. It can basically be “tuned” to suit the homeowner’s exacting requirements, and also features an automatic re-start feature in the event of a power interruption. Additionally Daikin Altherma system is equipped with a back-up heater that can be used for supplemental heating during extremely cold outdoor temperatures or as a back-up to the outdoor unit. Another benefit offered by Daikin Altherma is that it operates extremely quietly – as low as 49 dB(A) – and can even be set to produce 10dB(A) less noise during the night.
