Older buildings need climate
control, too. That’s where modernization of older structures can get
challenging - maintaining the architectural integrity while performing
necessary upgrades. The task of reconfiguring permanent equipment to maintain
critical operations in some areas while construction happens in other zones is
but another hurdle. Good planning and careful execution, along with a couple of
variations on the temporary HVAC theme, can protect past craftsmanship while
ensuring future comfort.
Leaning on experience and data from various K-12 cities and projects, the author pursues some less conventional design approaches. They may revolve around radiant heating and/or cooling, but depending on school size and other factors, the smart use of heat recovery, DOAS, and improved central plants could also put a project on the HVAC honor roll.
